A University of Wyoming geology professor who is serving as the director of the Division of Earth Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF) will speak at the Phi Beta Kappa initiation ceremony Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room.

Carol Frost will return to Wyoming to present “‘As nearly free as possible’: Liberated by the Liberal Arts” at the initiation of 41 seniors and four juniors into the nation’s oldest academic honorary society. The ceremony is open to the public, followed by a short reception.

Frost began a two-year appointment with NSF late last year. She serves as the principal spokesperson in the area of earth sciences, directing activities of the earth sciences division, including allocating resources, assessing needs and trends in geosciences research and education, and setting policy.

Frost was elected an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa in 2004 and served formerly as president of the UW Alpha Chapter. Her various administrative roles at UW include former associate provost and vice president for special projects at UW. She continues to retain her UW faculty position.

Phi Beta Kappa elects new members once a year after a faculty committee performs a detailed review of academic records. UW’s chapter sponsors lectures, scholarships and other academic activities promoting the liberal arts and the life of the mind.

This November, the chapter will celebrate the 75th anniversary of receiving its charter from the national society. For more information about Phi Beta Kappa at UW, visit www.uwyo.edu/pbk.
