Kyle De Young, an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Psychology, was recently named president of the Academy for Eating Disorders for the next year.

Kyle De Young, an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Psychology, will guide the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) during its milestone 25th year.

De Young will serve as the organization’s president for a one-year term.

The AED is a global professional association committed to leadership in eating disorders research, education, treatment and prevention. AED helps researchers connect and collaborate with each other, and keep abreast of recent developments in eating disorders research.

“I feel honored to have been entrusted by my fellow members with the great responsibility of guiding the Academy for Eating Disorders for this coming year,” says De Young, who has been at UW since 2016. “Taking over the AED on its 25th anniversary gave me a chance to reflect on where the AED began, how far it has come and where it is headed. It is truly inspiring to see myself in a position held by a short list of people I have admired my entire career.”

During his term, De Young says he hopes to increase the diversity and inclusion of the organization; expand the organization’s educational offerings to reach places all over the world where access to evidence-based eating disorder treatment has lagged behind; and spearhead the expansion of the AED’s treatment recommendations for eating disorders to include multiple modes of intervention including medical, nutrition and psychological.

De Young has been a member of AED since 2006.

De Young received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology and his master’s degree in psychology, both from the University of Albany. He received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and philosophy, both from the University of Iowa.
