The University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series continues with a collaboration featuring Jesse Lee, Blake McGee, Tiger Robison and John Wilhelm Friday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
“Balcony of the Sea” will be “freely improvised.” Lee, tape loop; Robison, electric bass; and Wilhelm, synth and electric guitar, will perform separate duos with clarinetist McGee. The final performance will be a collaboration of all featured musicians.
Free improvisation began in the 1960s as a response from classically trained musicians to “free jazz.” Unlike jazz, there are no set rules for form, chords or sound production in free improvisation. Instead, the focus is placed on timbre, rhythm, pitch and musicality. Instruments are often used in nontraditional ways to create unique sounds.
The UW Department of Music sponsors a variety of music performances throughout the semester. For future events, visit www.uwyo.edu/music/upcoming_events/index.html.
