UWs AHC Awards Teaching and Research Grants

The University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center (AHC) recently awarded 2019 teaching and research grants to two UW faculty members and one faculty member at Northwest College in Powell.

“The AHC is proud to offer support to university and community college instructors throughout the state,” says Ginny Kilander, reference services manager of the AHC. “These funds help facilitate research in AHC collections, which results in the knowledge being shared with broad Wyoming communities. It is always exciting to see the creative uses of the collections in the teaching curriculum, and we are happy to work with instructors and students in developing course content and research projects.”

Grants are awarded to recipients to implement research projects, course development and symposia that use AHC’s resource material. Grant awards range from $200 to $3,000, depending on the scope and type of project.

The grant recipients are:

-- Melissa Morris, an assistant professor in the UW Department of History. Her grant will support a one-day conference to showcase UW student research featuring AHC collections. The full-day symposium will be held in fall 2019 at the AHC with support from the Department of History and American Studies Program.

-- Cecelia Aragon, a professor in the UW Department of Theatre and Dance. Her grant will support her spring 2019 course, “Teaching Theater Artists: Service Learning in the Community.” Her students will read and explore children’s literature and stories found in the AHC’s Toppan Rare Book Library. The class will meet weekly in the AHC to review the literature and story books.

-- Amy McKinney, an associate professor in the Department of History at Northwest College. Her grant will support a speaker series at Northwest College in the fall 2019 semester. The talks will focus on the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Wyoming and will highlight specific Wyoming women such as Mary Bellamy, the first woman in the Wyoming Legislature, as well as themes addressing women’s issues in Wyoming. The speaker series will culminate with a special celebration Dec. 10, the official anniversary date of suffrage in Wyoming.

Additionally, scholars from across the country and beyond are encouraged to apply for UW’s AHC travel grant program. Awarded annually with funding from permanent endowments associated with UW’s world-class repository of manuscript collections, rare books and university archives, the grants can award up to $750 each to provide support for travel, food and lodging to researchers who wish to use the AHC’s collections.
