Bagley Named UW Faculty Fellow for Academic Policy and Leadership

The University of Wyoming’s Office of Academic Affairs has named Department of Chemical Engineering Professor David Bagley as Faculty Fellow for Academic Policy and Leadership.

In that role, Bagley will provide leadership and guidance for policy development, including ongoing review of university regulations on academic personnel and development and review of key standard administrative policies and procedures related to those regulations.

“Dave has provided outstanding leadership across many aspects of shared governance, and I am thrilled that he will be working with the Office of Academic Affairs, faculty and administrators to advance the academic mission of the university,” Vice Provost Tami Benham-Deal says.

Bagley completed his B.S. in chemical and petroleum refining engineering in 1984 at Colorado School of Mines. After working at Procter and Gamble Co. in Cincinnati for three years, developing softer and stronger toilet paper, he obtained his M.S. (1989) and Ph.D. (1993) in environmental engineering from Cornell University, along the way serving as a supply officer for the 402nd POW Camp in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm (1991).

After graduating from Cornell, Bagley worked as an environmental engineer with CH2M Hill Inc. in Deerfield Beach, Fla. In 1994, he started his career in academia, joining the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 2005, Bagley joined UW as an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and was appointed head of that department in August 2007, a position he held through December 2010. In July 2008, Bagley was promoted to professor and, in January 2011, he was appointed head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, a position he held through March 2015, when he returned to the professoriate in the newly created Department of Chemical Engineering.

Over the course of his career, Bagley has published 55 peer-reviewed journal articles, and he supervised/co-supervised eight Ph.D. students and 34 master’s students. He was awarded the Harrison Prescott Eddy Medal in 2000 by the Water Environment Federation for his research in sustainable wastewater treatment, and he continues his research on developing sustainable engineered systems to support human habitat.

Bagley has taught 21 different courses from freshman through the graduate level across four areas of engineering: civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and petroleum engineering. Bagley also designed the minor in process control and instrumentation, available to UW engineering students starting in 2019-2020.

He received Mortar Board “Top Prof” awards in 2007 and 2016; the Dr. David O. Cooney Outstanding Teacher Award in Chemical Engineering in 2017 and 2019; and was named an honorary marshal for the December 2018 UW commencement.

Bagley is a licensed professional engineer in Florida, Ontario and Wyoming. He recently served as a member-at-large on the UW Faculty Senate Executive Committee (2018-19) and chaired the University Reappointment, Tenure and Promotion Committee in 2017-18. He also has served as a governor-appointed member of the Wyoming Environmental Quality Council (EQC) since 2012, and chaired the EQC from 2015-17 and again in 2019.

He and his wife, Catherine, are parents of two UW alumni -- Megan in 2010 and Stephen in 2013 -- and they make sure their grandsons, Ian and Connor, always have the latest UW apparel.
