UW Art Museum to Host Fall Exhibitions Opening Reception Sept. 20

The University of Wyoming Art Museum will feature “(re)Evolution: Enrique Gomez de Molina & Troy Abbott” during a free reception to celebrate the exhibitions for the fall semester Friday, Sept. 20, from 6-8 p.m.

“(re)Evolution: Enrique Gomez de Molina & Troy Abbott” presents a survey of artworks by Enrique Gomez de Molina and Troy Abbott from the last 15 years. The exhibition explores the process of creation and reveals the evolution of each artist’s own creative process. The rogue taxidermy of Gomez de Molina and digital/vintage combinations of Abbott use nontraditional media to invite audiences to think more profoundly about the ethics of human/animal relationships. The exhibition invites viewers to consider what life on Earth might look like under different circumstances -- the (re)evolution. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 21.

“Trey Duvall: Do, Do, Do, Do, Do” presents an evolving site-specific sculpture, “Spool/Unspool,” and a rotating frieze of video performances. Duvall’s work concerns entropy, futility, humor, duration, stamina and material or physical exhaustion. His creative practice includes various forms of large-scale installation, video, performance and other sculptural and organizational mediums. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 16.

The UW Visual Arts Department Faculty Exhibition showcases the creative work of UW visual arts department faculty members. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, graphic design, videos and mixed media. Individually, UW Department of Visual Arts faculty members exhibit their work in national and international venues. The exhibition is an opportunity to view their work collectively. The exhibition is on view through Feb. 22, 2020.

The Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery integrates original art into UW coursework curriculum and presents exhibitions available to students and the public throughout the semester. Working closely with faculty, courses this semester are “Gender, Political Art and Propaganda: The Visual Legacy of Women’s Suffrage, 1860 to the Present (Art 3002/Gender & Women’s Studies 4500)”; “Women in the West (History/Gender & Women’s Studies 2389)”; and “Reading Text(iles) (Art 1101, a first-year seminar).” The exhibition is on view through Dec. 21.

“The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Wyoming” features the UW Art Museum’s collection of works from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel national gift program, “Fifty Works for Fifty States.” Works included are representations of the Vogels’ interest in minimalist, conceptualist and post-1960s art. This is the first time this collection has been shown in its entirety at the UW Art Museum; a selection was exhibited in 2011. The exhibition is on view through March 21, 2020.

“Sharon Louden: ‘Windows’ at the University of Wyoming Art Museum” presents a suspended, temporary, custom, site-specific sculpture using highly reflective, curved aluminum sheets in the UW Art Museum’s entrance hall. The installation is on view through August 2020.

The UW Art Museum collects, exhibits and interprets art to inspire creativity and nurture lifelong learning for the people of Wyoming. Located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 E. Willett Drive in Laramie, the museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday hours are extended to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
