UW Planetarium to Reopen for Four Public Shows During December

Stars in the University of Wyoming Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium’s sky will light up again to the public next month.

After a period of only private showings being offered since Sept. 8 due to COVID-19, the planetarium is again open to the public for four shows during December.

“We are happy to announce that we will have a handful of public shows for the month of December,” says Max Gilbraith, the planetarium’s coordinator. “We ask that all visitors comply with campus rules by wearing a face mask; distancing themselves from others not within their household; and staying home if they feel ill.”

Seating is limited, so tickets will be by reservation only. To purchase tickets, email planetarium@uwyo.edu or leave a voicemail at (307) 766-6506. Prices are $3 for students and children, and $5 for adults.

The December schedule is:

-- “Wyoming Skies,” Tuesday, Dec. 8, and Tuesday, Dec. 15, both at 7 p.m. The program provides a tour of the constellations and celestial objects, and is best seen from this part of Wyoming in the winter sky.

-- “Star of the Magi,” Friday, Dec. 11, and Friday, Dec. 18, both at 7 p.m. Learn about the heavens, wonder and speculate with Chip Kobulnicky, an astronomer and UW professor of physics and astronomy, as he presents some of the celestial possibilities that may underlie the storied “star that rose in the East” leading the “magi” to the birthplace of Jesus.

“If you have a group larger than six, or cannot visit the shows, the planetarium continues to be available for private shows through December,” Gilbraith says. “We also can do planetarium presentations for them virtually.”

The rate for private shows is the same as ticket prices for public events, he adds.

To view current free online planetarium programs, go to www.uwyo.edu/physics/planetarium/schedule.html. A dozen free movies are available online, Gilbraith says.
