Using Technology to Help Caregivers Topic of UW Program May 3

The growing health care needs of older adults have led providers and technicians to seek technological approaches to enhance the lives of people living with dementia and their caregivers.

That will be the message of Lynn Gitlow, an occupational therapist of more than 20 years who specializes in mental health, geriatrics and assistive technology. She will present “Caregiver Support: Using Technology to Ease the Caregiver Burden” at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, via Zoom. The free public program is part of the Wyoming Dementia Together (WDT) program. WDT is a statewide, nonprofit caregiver network operating through the University of Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA).

Gitlow, an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Ithaca College, says technological advancements have not only enhanced health care for older adults, but they also have benefited patient comfort, safety and quality of life, and have reduced costs.

“The health care industry has rapidly sought to adopt technological advancements,” she says. “These include wearable devices, implantable devices, wireless communications and remote monitoring. All of these can benefit those living with dementia and their caregivers.”

WDT meets throughout the year by Zoom every other Wednesday. Programs feature a guest speaker and allow time for interactive discussion among those who attend online from throughout Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain region.
