Veterans Financial Aid

Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid (OSFA)

If you previously served in the armed forces you may be able to apply your benefits towards a college education. Simply come to the Student Financial Services and ask to meet with our VA Certifying Official. You may also contact us by email at: sfs@uwyo.edu.

While you are visiting the OSFA we will also be able to give you information how to apply for Federal Student Aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA can be completed before you apply for admission.  Our office will not send a Financial Aid Offer until you have been accepted by admissions for a specific term.

By completing the FAFSA you will learn if you qualify for a Federal Pell Grant (which is considered free assistance), it will also allow you to consider whether a Federal Direct Loan is needed to cover your costs.  The VA Certifying Official can explain the terms of the loan.

In State Tuition for Non-Resident Veterans

Changes to University of Wyoming policy recently approved by UW's Board of Trustees have expanded the ranks of those who qualify for the university's offer of in-state tuition to military veterans.   For more information please contact Marty Martinez, or another staff member, at the Veterans Services Center, or Sara Morris in the Student Financial Aid office.  You may also read more about this in the UW press release.

Financial aid is an important obstacle that college students face.  Student veterans are no exception especially if you are not a resident of the state and have to pay out of state tuition.  The VA has many different programs that help pay for school but sometimes that is not enough.  The Veterans Services Center can help.  At the Veterans Services Center we have information of the different VA education benefits as well as scholarship information for veterans going to school.  If we cannot answer your question we will direct you to the resources that will answer your question.  For more information on Student Finanical Services resources please use the link.

The Veterans Services Center also provides work study positions to qualified students.  To learn how to qualify for a work study position please follow this link to the VA work study criteria page.  To apply for a work-study position at the University of Wyoming Veterans Services Center please see the Veterans Services Center staff for an application.

The American Legion Husted-Pendelton Post 14 Laramie, Wyoming is offering a scholarship for post 9/11 veterans attending the University of Wyoming.  The scholarship application can be picked up in the Veterans Services Center in Knight Hall room 241.

The Michael O'Neill Banking scholarship is available for veterans attending the banking program in the College of Business.  The scholarship is for $1000 and applicants must be recommended by faculty members.  For more information contact Sherrill Schaffer in the College of Business.

VA educational eligibility requirements and benefits are different depending on which chapter that you are applying for.  Below we have included links to provide you with the information needed to make your decision on what VA benefits you qualify for and which would best suit your needs.

Major General Susan Pamerleau's Scholarship for Sociology Majors

MAJOR GENERAL SUSAN PAMERLEAU has created a new scholarship earmarked exclusively for UW students who are veterans and are also Sociology majors. Pamerleau was a Sociology major as an undergraduate (UW, Class of 1968). She believes that her background in Sociology served her well during her time in the military and in her post-military career as senior vice president of USAA, which provides financial services to military families.

If you have declared Sociology as your major, you may be eligible for the PAMERLEAU Scholarship. The Department of Sociology works closely with the UW Veterans Service Center and Office of the Registrar to identify our majors who are veterans to create a scholarship-eligible pool before selecting a scholarship recipient.

If you are not a Sociology major but want to consider Sociology as a major, please contact the Chair of the Department of Sociology: Professor Donna Barnes at dbarnes@uwyo.edu.
