Grasshoppers of Wyoming and the West

Entomology

Field Guide to Common Western Grasshoppers

List of Species Fact Sheets

Field Guide Contents

All but one of the grasshopper species in this field guide belong to the family Acrididae. They are further subdivided into three subfamilies: Melanoplinae, Gomphocerinae, and Oedipodinae. To distinguish between the subfamilies, see the appropriate section of Rangeland Grasshopper Management. These subfamilies are the basis for the organization of the grasshopper fact sheets. Within each subfamily, the species are organized alphabetically by their scientific names. The Lubber Grasshopper, Brachystola magna, belongs to the family Romaleidae, Tribe Brachystolini, and the Mormon Cricket, Anabrus simplex, is actually a shield-backed katydid, belonging to the family Tettigoniidae, sub-family Decticinae. Each has been given its own unique background color.
