Global Engagement Office staff had the privilege of accompanying members of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources on a trip to Mongolia in September 2023. The delegation’s goal was to build on current research projects in the country, formalize partnerships with several universities, connect with UW alumni, and explore areas for future collaboration.
Having worked in Mongolia for almost two decades, Dean John Koprowski was able to arrange meetings with the National University of Mongolia (NUM), The Mongolia Academy of Sciences (MAS), and the Mongolia University of Science and Technology. UW has signed agreements with both NUM and MAS.
During the visit, the group was able to connect with alumni, Bujidmaa Borkhuu, who is a climate scientist working in Ulaanbaatar. She received her PhD in Botany/Plant Biology from UW in 2014. Bujidmaa enjoyed connecting with the group, reminiscing about her time in Laramie!
Taking a break from the city, the group traveled to Hustai National Park, home to the famous Prezwalski’s horses. Meeting with park staff, the group discussed potential research internship opportunities.
When reflecting on the trip, Vice Provost Isa Helfgott had the following to say, “We couldn't quite believe how deep the similarities are with Wyoming, from economic interests in energy and tourism to beautiful open landscapes peppered by livestock and wildlife. We had a wonderful time meeting with terrific UW alumni and building partnerships with universities, scientific research personnel and national parks staff. Let us know if you're interested in participating in future discussions with potential partners there.”
