Background and Expertise

Callie Berman is the Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Private Lands Stewardship (PLS) in the Ruckelshaus Institute.  Callie’s research with the PLS analyzes the human dimensions of conservation and land use across the North American Central Grasslands. Her work looks to identify conservation strategies across private lands in the biome while considering diverse stakeholder interests, pressures from energy and residential development, and land use changes.

Callie’s earlier research investigating the role of historical land use relationships in shaping resource management practices in Eurasia today continues to inform her research for the importance of diverse development histories, governance systems and cultural institutions. She has worked in universities across Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan where she taught undergraduate courses in sustainability which deal with the complexity of environmental conservation and economic development needs across diverse cultural contexts. She has also taught master’s level courses in research design and social science fieldwork methods. Callie maintains a passion for international exchange to support new ways of thinking and innovative approaches to complex global challenges.
