Alexa Socianu

Geology & Geophysics

Background:
I was born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.  While completing an undergraduate double major in Biology and Geology, I also pursued coursework to become a High School science teacher.  Coming from the Midwest where mountains are non-existent, I’ve always been fascinated by Rocky Mountain geology.  I first came to Wyoming in 2010 as part of a project aimed at studying ancient global warming events. I eventually moved to Wyoming in the summer of 2011 to pursue my Masters Degree in Geology at the University of Wyoming and I’m very excited to share my passion with students and teachers alike!

Degree Sought and Department:
M.S. Candidate in Department of Geology & Geophysics

Education:
B.A. in Biology and Earth & Planetary Sciences from Northwestern University
M.S. Candidate in Geology & Geophysics at University of Wyoming

Current Research:
I use geochemistry to solve real-world issues spanning the range of topics from unconventional petroleum systems to carbon storage systems and beyond.  Some of my previous research focused on developing a method for detecting unwanted carbon dioxide leaks deep in the ground.  More recently I have been studying the geochemistry of the Mowry Shale, an important source rock for oil and gas resources produced right here in the great State of Wyoming.
