Each year the Campus Sustainability Committee hires intern(s) to conduct an inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions for UW's records. Data sorted by year can be viewed below.
Note: As of 2018, the University of Wyoming is no longer a signatory of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. However, the Campus Sustainability Committee continues to complete greenhouse gas emission inventories each year. This page also serves as a reference to UW’s past climate action commitment and planning activities.
In September 2007, President Buchanan signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, committing UW to reducing its carbon emissions over the coming decades, and to eventually become carbon neutral. As part of the Commitment, UW has now completed its Climate Action Plan, the document to guide the institution in achieving its sustainability goals. The Climate Action Plan is a joint effort of University administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
As part of the President's Climate Commitment (PCC), the Campus Sustainability tracks greenhouse gas emissions each year. Through energy efficiency and conservation measures, emissions have remained stable or have declined, even as UW has added more building square footage in recent years. The 2014-15 drop in emissions was due in part to use of natural gas in the Central Energy Plant. The 2016 GHG Emissions data is shown below:
