Student Counseling Services

The demand for counseling on campus has increased each year. Although we are fortunate to have a dedicated staff of counselors, we are typically unable to offer weekly individual appointments or long-term care except in emergency situations. However, many students participate in weekly group treatment and workshops. Due to the extensive time required for comprehensive psychological evaluations, we cannot provide this service. Our staff is happy to provide community-based referrals to students looking for longer term or specialty counseling services.

Our clinic utilizes a time-effective, solution focused approach to treatment. Research indicates that most clinical change happens early in treatment, by 6-8 sessions, though for many people change can happen much earlier.

What kind of appointment should I ask for?

  • Drop In Initial Appointment

This brief, introductory appointment will help determine best options for follow up care.

This 50 minute targeted session is meant to directly address a specific issue in a longer single session. This is not a crisis session. You may seek future counseling if needed.

  • Crisis

This intervention is meant to address extreme emotional dysregulation or potential harm to self or others.

We encourage students to be proactive in maintaining their health and wellness. Common reasons for calling include: academic issues, stress management, connection to campus and/or community resources, behavior problems, partner violence, changing eating patterns, feeling unusually emotional, harassment or stalking, identity concerns, isolation, traumatic event, or interpersonal problems.

We tailor interventions to a client's needs and readiness to change, and utilize our campus and community partners in providing effective wraparound services. This may mean a referral to another clinic for longer term treatment or specialized needs.

Single Session Therapy (SST)

Single Session Therapy (SST) is a method of delivering therapy where the client and clinician approach a session with the intention that this will be the only session that the client attends in this circumstance. (Clients are not limited to one SST appointment). Client and clinician will address the need identified by the client and work toward a solution in one session.

Although clients may schedule additional Single Session Therapy appointments, they are first asked to

  1. Reflect on what you learned.

  2. Act on what you learned.

  3. Let time pass, reflect.

  4. Decide if another appointment is necessary.

SST can be advantageous as it addresses the immediate needs of the client, usually with a same day appointment. SST focuses less on the intake process and allows the client and clinician to maximize the first therapeutic encounter.

SST is not a substitution for Crisis Interventions Services involving potential threats of harm to self or others. Crisis situations will continue to be addressed by UCC clinical staff as a top priority

SST is not recommended for long-term or chronic mental health needs. Clients will be given referral options, either to another treatment modality within the UCC or to a campus or a community provider, should SST not be the appropriate level of treatment.

Clients may choose whether they would like to engage in SST or traditional individual or group therapy. Please indicate in communication either to the front office staff or in digital communication which type of treatment is being sought.

The UCC staff is happy to answer any questions about SST by contacting our office at 307-766-2187.
