Funding Opportunities

Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research

WIHR offers different types of regular funding as resources allow:

NEH Summer Stipend Competition

Each year WIHR (the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research), on behalf of UW, nominates up to two candidates (1 junior, 1 senior) for the NEH Summer Stipend award. The NEH stipend provides $6,000 for full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months in the summe. Information about the award appears on the NEH website:

In recognition of the fact that this is a highly competitive program, WIHR provides support should the UW candidate(s) not be selected by the NEH.

Two winners each received $3,000 in June, 2018.

Summer 2018 Winners:  Jarman and Edson

Two more winner wlll receive funds for the summer of 2019.

Call for applications for Summer 2019.

Colleagues with projects that meet the award specifications should read the WIHR NEH Competition Instructions, and submit their materials, using the NEH application package, to WIHR by September 7, 9:00 a.m.  (UW winners will then submit an application to the NEH.)

UW in Scotland

Are you interested in transdisciplinary research and teaching in Scotland?

The UW in Scotland project can sponsor one faculty member who is not yet a member of the Abbotsford cohort to accompany the 2018 class, and to work with its faculty, in preparation to join the cohort and potentially to teach a future UW in Scotland course. (Faculty for 2018 were Sarah Strauss and Carrick Eggleston.)

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Caroline McCracken-Flesher for details.

Research and Writing Groups

Research and Writing Groups are intended to foster discussion.  Description.

The research and writing groups formed under 2016 sponsorship cover a range of settings from prison to indexicals.  See the currently funded groups: Research and Writing Groups

Research Projects

The 2018 competition for individual and collaborative grants is on hold.

Research grants, to individuals or collaborative groups, foster original research that is firmly based in the humanities. An interdisciplinary grant that builds connections with non-humanities fields must clearly articulate this connection in the context of a humanities project.

No grants were awarded in 2017 due to budget restrictions.

See the 2016 individual and collaborative awardees:  Grant Winners

Fellowship in the Public Practice of Humanities

The Fellowship supports public humanities practitioners from Wyoming museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions. WIHR support is intended to free the Fellowship winner for one to two weeks of fulltime research at the University of Wyoming to develop new programming or support new uses of his or her organization's materials. The Fellowship awards $1,000 per week for up to two weeks of fulltime work while in residence in Laramie. WIHR will provide appropriate office or work space, consultation with UW humanities faculty and professional staff members, and a community of interested colleagues who will help the Fellowship winner workshop ideas and approaches in their research. Click here for further details.

International Research Fellowship

This Fellowship provides facilities and non-remunerative resources so that a scholar whose institutional affiliation is outside the United States can conduct his or her research without any scheduled interruption except for research presentations to the Institute community. Minimum qualification is the field-appropriate terminal degree (e.g., the Ph.D. or MFA) or documentation of extensive alternate qualifications. Periods of residence can vary from two weeks to four months. While the Fellow will receive no stipend from WIHR, the Institute will offer an appropriate study location, access to the university library and the American Heritage Center, and logistical assistance in finding temporary housing in Laramie. Click here for further details.

Co-Sponsored Projects

The overall mission of WIHR is to help establish and maintain a community of humanities scholars at the University of Wyoming and to foster excellence in humanities research. As part of these aims, WIHR has established a fund to support humanities-related activities at the University. The kinds of activities eligible for support from this fund include, but are not limited to:

  • Bringing distinguished scholars in humanities related fields to deliver public talks at the University, affiliated Community Colleges and/or broader Wyoming community.
  • Developing seminars, symposia, conferences, and/or workshops that help foster and advance humanities based research at the University.

Funding can be used to help cover the costs of honoraria, travel, and other incidental expenses for these kinds of activities.

Application Process:

Along with the completed coversheet, applications should include a separate page (no more than 1 single-spaced page in length) that provides a detailed description of the intended use of the funding. In your description, please be sure to specifically discuss how your application fulfills the general purpose of promoting humanities-based research.

In addition, all applications should include an additional page providing a detailed budget listing specific categories and amounts of proposed expenditure for each.  This budget should reflect:  (1) the total cost of the proposed activity; (2) the costs that will be covered by WIHR funds; and (3) other sources from whom you are requesting funding and, if available, the amount that each has pledged.
