Born in Virginia in 1925, Clay Blair, Jr. grew up in Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington, D.C. During December, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, volunteering for submarine duty. After the war he attended Tulane University and Columbia University's School of Journalism. During the 1950s Blair was a correspondent for Time-Life before becoming a staff writer and Washington editor for the Saturday Evening Post. Blair served as managing editor and editor-in-chief of the Post during the early 1960s and also served as editor-in-chief of Curtis Publishing Company, which published the Post as well as Ladies Home Journal, American Home, and Jack and Jill magazines.
