Bridget Groat is the oldest daughter of Guy and Darlene Groat and is Alaska Native of Iñupiaq, Yup’ik, Alutiiq, and Dena’ina descent. Dr. Groat grew up in Naknek and is an enrolled member of Naknek Native Village. She received her Ph.D. from Arizona State and her M.A. and B.A from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her areas of interest include 19th and 20th century Native American history, Indigenous women’s history, oral history, Alaska Native history, Indigenous food sovereignty, environmental History, and public history. Dr. Groat began her career as a commercial salmon fisherman and visits her home village in Alaska to conduct research and promote salmon and food sovereignty whenever possible.
