Increasing Accessibility of Undergraduate Research

Research experiences are a central component of a college education for undergraduate students, especially in STEM fields, and opportunities to engage in authentic research are crucial. However, many students are unaware of the importance of such experiences or are unsure of how to find opportunities. Sometimes, these opportunities are advertised via “word of mouth” and other informal avenues which can be subject to implicit biases. To increase the accessibility of undergraduate research opportunities in the life sciences at UW, the Botany DEI committee has created a “job board” for undergraduate research. Students can peruse the listings on the job board and reach out to the listed contact when they find opportunities they wish to pursue.
