The University of Wyoming has established a framework for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) initiative, which serves as a guided pedagogical approach to engage the academic community (e.g., faculty, instructors, lecturers, graduate assistants) in scholarship related to teaching and learning collaboratively. The overarching goal of the SoTL initiative at UW is to create a culture that encourages systematic, inquiry-based, evidence-based, innovative, and inclusive approaches to assess and reflect on students’ learning and experiences and engagement in deep teaching processes.
The UW’s SoTL initiative provides a platform for academic community members to contribute to scholarship, creative work, and discovery of knowledge in the realm of teaching and learning. The SoTL incorporates research methodologies to conduct a systematic and evidence-based inquiry, contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Engaging in SoTL projects allows faculty and educators:
• To embrace and experiment with new quality teaching approaches and strategies promoting a culture of continuous advancement in teaching practices.
• Explore and reflect on their teaching methods and students’ learning experiences to better meet the diverse learning needs within the academic community.
• Implement collaborative reflections in the coursework to affect pedagogy and enhance the overall learning experience for students.
• Empower a collaborative action and inquiry-based research spirit among faculty and educators through the processes of reflection and assessment.
We extend a warm invitation to all University of Wyoming instructors (faculty, staff, and Graduate Teaching Assistants) to actively engage in the ECTL’s SoTL Café and become valued members of our Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Community. These sessions are dedicated to fostering the growth of our SoTL community by facilitating interdisciplinary discussions on SoTL projects and exchanging insights on teaching and student learning approaches.
Engage in the ECTL’s SoTL Café for a well-rounded experience, including an in-depth analysis of relevant SoTL articles, discussions on research findings, and collaborative brainstorming for potential projects. These sessions also provide valuable insights for individuals with existing projects, offering guidance on publishing, or sharing within the SoTL field. Explore opportunities to turn local or global SoTL partnerships into research initiatives, enhancing the practice of teaching and learning.
Your active involvement in these sessions not only contributes to the collective knowledge of our community but also enhances the quality of teaching and learning practices. Join us as we collectively advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at the University of Wyoming.

To promote a campus-wide SoTL culture, the ECTL launched the first SoTL initiative at our university with a three-day Summer Institute in 2018. For promoting SoTL more broadly at our university, we examined the experiences of our ECTL and our work with a cohort of participants from a variety of disciplines, a partnership between our business school and an international university, and collaboration with our university Learning Actively Mentoring Program (LAMP) Fellows program. Pre- and post-surveys and interviews were used to find out participants' perspectives regarding what worked well for them, areas of struggle, their department support, and their identity as SoTL scholars.
This presentation that was given at the SoTL Summit conference in 2021 shows lessons learned from this study and presents a new approach for supporting our next cohort.
