Student Learning Outcomes

Student learning outcomes (SLOs) tell us what students will be able to do upon the completion of a course and degree program.
At the University of Wyoming, the intent is for SLOs to be student centered, specific and measurable. As we focus on student learning and learning improvement, it is important to consider what, how and why learning occurs. Beginning with SLOs gives us a roadmap on where to go and then we focus very specifically on how the curriculum, pedagogy and co-curricular experiences support that attainment.

What does the literature say? 
"(Student Learning) Outcomes are more specific than goals and are intentionally written in a way that allows you to measure achievement of each outcome" (Meaningful & Manageable Program Assessment: A How-To Guide for Higher Education Faculty, 2017).
"The first step of assessment is to establish learning goals (outcomes)" (Assessment Clear and Simple: A Practical Guide for Institutions, Departments, and General Education, 2nd Ed., 2010).
"SLOs are supposed to represent what the entire program and its faculty are working toward - a brand of success marked by how students' learning is transformed in very specific ways. Successful SLOs are much more than the right verbs; they should represent faculty coming together with a shared vision of what the program looks like and the types of knowledge, skills, and attitudes graduates will possess. It is even better if students can contribute to SLO formation as well" (Assessment 101 in Higher Education: The Fundamentals and How to Apply Them, 2025).
