Gender and Women's Studies Program

The Gender and Women's Studies Program is pleased to offer funding to promote internationally-focused research that addresses women's and girls’ human rights, inter- and intrastate conflict, and peace. We will offer our final award in 2023, to a graduate student pursuing research in these areas. This fund was established in 2010 and made possible through the generous contributions of Dr. Susan McKay, emeritus faculty, as well as through donations from friends of Gender and Women's Studies.

Purpose 

To support scholarship that proactively addresses women's and girls’ human rights, violence in armed conflict, and peace efforts, and to build capacity at the University of Wyoming for addressing these issues through courses and scholarship. Although a broad range of projects will be considered, the following are examples of research this fund is intended to address:

• a study of how armed conflict promotes sex trafficking and/or gender-based violence of girls and women
• a comparative analysis of geo-political regions of women's peace building initiatives
• a research project to develop the applicant's ability to teach curricular content about experiences of women/girls in situations of conflict during the past decade, with emphasis on non-state actors

Examples of specific projects that have been funded include:

• "Cambodia's Forgotten Women: Gender Based Crimes and Sexual Violence Against Women in Democratic Kampuchea"
• Providing Access to Justice: Women and Children's Legal Rights in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania"
• "Femicides in Curded Juarez and the Organizations that Seek to Address this Issue"
• "Buy and Save: How Social Businesses in Cambodia Package Charity for Sale"
• "Palestinian Girls: Accessing Education and Human Rights"

Eligibility and Award

We will be awarding the final funding amount of $1500 in the spring of 2023 to a UW Graduate student pursuing research relevant to the guidelines above. The fund seeks to enhance feminist research and dissemination of research findings regarding women and girls, armed conflict, and peace.

Recipients may be from any department or unit on campus, and the awardee will be expected to provide a public presentation to the Gender & Women’s Studies community based upon the research during the following academic year.

Types of Support

The following expenses can be covered by this award:

• Graduate student thesis/dissertation support including travel, equipment, supplies and other purchases if all of such items are directly related to the purposes of the fund.
