Students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences who are admitted to the Honors College in AY2019-2020 and beyond are automatically enrolled in “Engineering Honors”. Students who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher remain in this track and graduate with a concurrent degree in Engineering Honors. If a student’s GPA drops below a 3.5, but remains between a 3.25-3.49, they will be transferred into the Honors Core.

Requirements for Engineering Honors include:

  • Five courses in the Honors College

  • Nine credits in Engineering Honors courses, to include 3 credits of an Honors Research course (ES 4580 or ES 3890),

  • A research experience and oral presentation. Engineering Honors students may complete the research experience requirement and oral presentation using:

    1. Their senior design project

    2. The Honors Undergraduate Research Course (ES 4580) project OR

    3. An independent research/creative project with faculty mentor oversight

Requirements for the Honors Core include:

  • Five courses in the Honors College

  • A research/creative experience and oral presentation (Honors Capstone). Honors Core students may complete the research requirement and oral presentation using:

    1. Their senior design project OR

    2. An independent research/creative project with faculty mentor oversight

Students in either program complete the oral presentation requirement by giving an individual (not group) presentation during Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Across the Disciplines Day or another Honors-approved venue (such as a inter/national conference). Students presenting on their senior design project must give an individual oral presentation that highlights their own contribution to the group senior design project.
College of Engineering and Physical Sciences students in the Honors College (both Engineering Honors and Honors Core) must declare their intention to complete the research experience (otherwise known as the Honors Capstone) by submitting the Student Initiation Form and requesting that the faculty mentor or instructor for their senior design complete the Faculty Initiation Form. Faculty mentors will also complete an evaluation rubric indicating whether the project was Pass or Unsatisfactory. Students are also required to upload their final design project to the Honors College repository. All forms are online on the UW Honors Capstone page.
