Honors SOAR Advanced Badge

What will I learn through Honors SOAR?

Learning Outcome 1: Students will engage in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary inquiry and critical reflection to enhance your understanding of the complexity of every field of human knowledge and to strengthen your ability to reflect critically about the processes of knowledge formation.

Learning Outcome 2: Students will participate in civic and community engagement to become impactful contributors to various communities, including the Honors College and the University of Wyoming, among others. 

Learning Outcome 3: Students will experience and assess a wide variety of global perspectives to increase their understanding of human connectivity and culture and to understand and bridge different ways of knowing and believing in the world. 

Learning Outcome 4: Students will build skills in project development, leadership, and teamwork to prepare them for their future academic and professional careers. 

What are the requirements?

The Honors SOAR Advanced Badge includes requirements in the following areas: Global and Cultural Perspectives, Arts and Humanities Integration, Civic and Community Engagement, STEM Investigation, Leadership and Teamwork Readiness, and the Advanced Capstone Training Module. Please see the descriptions of each required component below. These requirements are completed using the Suitable application.

1. Building Honors Community (20 points)

Through this category, you will engage with events and activities that foster connection with other Honors students, enabling you to build community with diverse individuals while also engaging in a variety of meaningful experiences. Opportunities in this category expand your ability to connect with honors students, faculty, and staff, and to engage with diverse pillars of our honors community. Reflecting on events and activities in this category allows you to develop your understanding of what it means to be an individual honors student who is also part of an honors community.  

Engagement in a minimum of 2 opportunities is required. Event must be designated as a "Building Honors Community" opportunity to fulfill this requirements. In the Suitable app, 30 points total will be displayed as being required, which includes 10 points earned from the First-Year Badge. 

*2 separate events required (10 pts each)

2. Global Cultural Perspectives (30 points)

Through this category, you will engage with events and activities that promote a global understanding of cultural discovery, and immersion and identity-building across cultural boundaries. Opportunities in this category range from studying abroad, participating in multicultural activities, and learning about the global cultural diversity that surrounds you. Reflecting about experiences in this category allows you to understand the interconnected nature of global systems and the complex underpinnings of identities and ideas, as well as to understand yourself as a global citizen connected to other humans across national and cultural boundaries.  

*3 separate events required (10 pts each) or 1 study abroad experience (30 points)

3. Arts and Humanities Integration (30 points)

Explore events and activities that showcase the vital role of the arts and humanities within the fabric of human life and society. Opportunities in this category include visiting museums, art events, humanities lectures, creative activities, and more. Reflecting about experiences in this category allows you to develop a humanistic perspective and to understand how creative activity shapes our world. 

*3 separate events required (10 pts each) 

 

4. STEM Investigation (30 points)

Sharpen your STEM skills as you engage with events and activities that focus on the use of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and beyond. Opportunities in this category include independent or group research, attending scientific talks, participating in STEM-based fairs, and much more. Reflecting about the events and activities in this category allows you to practice critical thinking and discover some of the underlying scientific principles of our world. 

*3 separate events required (10 pts each)

5. Civic and Community Engagement (20 points)

Participate in activities and events that enable you to serve a community that is important to you and that strengthen your skills as an agent for positive change and effective solutions in your community. Opportunities in this category include leading, volunteering for, attending meetings, or more, for a community of your choice. Communities of your choice can include UW or City of Laramie organizations, a church, a school group, a children’s or a seniors’ group, an athletic club, a non-profit agency, a library, or another group you belong to. Reflecting about your experiences in this category allows you to see yourself as an engaged and impactful community member and to developing effective strategies for strengthening communities to which you belong.

*2 separate events required (10 pts each) 

6. Leadership and Teamwork Readiness (20 points)

Be a part of activities and initiatives that prepare you to become a collaborative, responsible, and engaged leader in your future professional life. Opportunities in this category range from participating in seminars, attending resume or CV workshops, holding leadership positions on campus or in local organizations, participating in internship or research opportunities, and more. Reflecting about experiences in this category allows you to understand your own strengths as a leader and team member and to develop language you can rely on when drafting cover letters or resumes and interviewing for jobs. 

*2 separate events required (10 pts each) 

 

7. Completion of the Advanced Capstone Training Module (150 points)

Honors students will successfully complete the various levels of the Honors Capstone Module via WyoGroups.
