Originally from Madison, Alabama, Debra grew up in a military family. She attended Berea College in Kentucky where she earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish, graduating in 2009. Following her undergraduate education, she served in the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program which brought her to Casper, Wyoming. Really enjoying her experience in the west, Debra stayed and worked for various non-profits that emphasized youth development.
She decided to attend law school to continue her work with under-served populations. She was attracted to the University of Wyoming because of the clinical opportunities, and was determined to attend after visiting with previous student clinic directors about their experience in the clinic.
Deb was recently awarded a Law Student Fellowship Program award from the National Bar Institute (NBI). The fellowship awards are granted to students who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing equality and justice through work in their law schools, their neighborhoods, and community.
Deb has worked in the Clinic since 2016 and was inspired to become a clinic director to continue to focus on "the big picture" of attending law school. She believes that working with real clients on a daily basis serves as an important reminder of the difference you can make with your law degree.
Additionally, she feels that the clinics provide her with the experience that she needs to be successful once she starts her career.
"Because of my time at the CLinic, I know that I am graduating with the practical skills to practice law competently and with confidence," she says, "In the future, this experience will be what I talk about to aspiring lawyers."
