Take the MPE Online

Online Proctoring via Honorlock

In order to take the MPE online, students need three things:

  1. To purchase the ALEKS PPL test pack
  2. To download and purchase Honorlock remote proctoring extension
  3. To review the Honorlock & ALEKS guidelines.

Honorock is a remote proctoring service that creates a fair testing environment for all students by monitoring exam sessions and alerting a live proctor if any issues are detected. Students can take the MPE at any time and from any location, provided they have a suitable testing environment, required hardware, and a stable internet connection. No scheduling is necessary. Honorlock proctoring costs $10 (plus tax) per attempt, payable upon login. Students must use Honorlock proctoring if they are taking the MPE outside of an on-campus proctoring session.

How to set up Honorlock:

  1. Using a Google Chrome browser, download and install the Honorlock Chrome Extension
  2. With the extension installed, navigate to your ALEKS PPL assessment and follow the proctoring instructions that appear on-screen.

Take the exam

The University of Wyoming utilizes the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning (PPL) online assessment to determine a student's math placement and requires the exam to be proctored, either in-person or by using Honorlock. The ALEKS PPL test pack costs $15 (plus tax) and includes 1 assessment, access to guided learning modules, and up to 4 retake opportunities. Scores are good for one year and access lasts for one year. After one year, students will have to purchase access again.

If you have a disability, please contact Disability Support Services or call 307-766-3073 to arrange appropriate testing accommodations before accessing the exam.

When creating a new ALEKS PPL account, enter the course code 6EKAN-DPQQ3 and select the following:

  • "I have never used ALEKS"
  • "Purchase access online"
  • Please note that the current cohort is named "UWyo Math Placement Exam beyond, Fall 2023." This is correct, though it may not reflect the current year.

Testing considerations

ALEKS PPL is a web-based application accessible from any computer (not a tablet or a phone) that meets the system requirements. To see if your computer meets the requirements, complete the system check (scroll down). It is your responsibility to test in a location with dependable internet for the entirety of the exam

Student studying.

  • Are you using Google Chrome with the Honorlock extension installed? After the extension is enabled, you should see a little shield with a checkmark in the upper right-hand corner of your browser.
  • If Honorlock has successfully launched and a blank "submit password" screen appears, try clicking submit (even though the field is empty). Honorlock should automatically submit the password, but there is a glitch for some students where they must manually hit "submit."
  • If these issues persist or if you encounter a different issue, please contact 24/7 Honorlock Support first, then email math-registration@uwyo.edu with a screenshot and explanation of the issue for assistance.

In order for your test attempt to be considered a "proctored" session, all applicable Honorlock & ALEKS PPL Guidelines must be followed. Honorlock will not notify you if you violate a guideline while taking the exam. If found to be in violation of any guidelines during review of your exam, your score will not be loaded (and you may be required to retake the exam in person).

Students have two hours to complete the 25-question exam. On average, it takes between 60-90 minutes to complete.

No, calculators are not permitted. An on-screen calculator will pop up when appropriate (only for specific questions).

After the exam, an unvalidated percentage score will appear on-screen. Your score will automatically be sent to UW and will be loaded within three business days, provided all testing guidelines were followed. For instructions on how to view your score in WyoWeb, please visit the After the Exam webpage.

You may retake the MPE in-person or online as many times as needed if you are not satisfied with your score. However, you'll need to satisfy the preparation requirement in the guided learning modules prior to all subsequent online attempts. See the After the Exam webpage for more information.

If you do not access ALEKS PPL through the link provided above ("View Testing Guidelines and Take the Exam"). You'll have to manually enter the course code, 6EKAN-DPQQ3. By entering the course code and taking the MPE online, you are consenting to the Honorlock & ALEKS PPL Guidelines.
