Math Placement

How does UW place you into a math class?

The purpose of math placement is to assess a student's proficiency in mathematics and determine the appropriate math course for the student's skill level. At the University of Wyoming, successful completion of a transferable college-level math course, a sufficient score on the AP, IB, or CLEP exams, or a qualifying score on the math section of the ACT or SAT can all serve as ways to satisfy the math placement requirement. If a student doesn't have math placement information from any of the above sources, or if a student isn't satisfied with their scores, they can take the math placement exam. The University of Wyoming utilizes the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning (PPL) assessment for math placement. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if you need to take the math placement exam.

Math placement exam exemptions

All incoming freshman and transfer students should take the MPE unless they qualify for one of the exemptions below. If one of these exemptions applies to you, then you may safely disregard the incoming student check list item. Note: the exemption (transcript, score report, etc) must be on record at least one week before the start of classes the following semester.
