Campus Construction Update for Week of May 24

These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of May 24-30:

9th Street Closure -- The City of Laramie has begun a major reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Ave. to Lewis Street. This portion of 9th street will be closed from May 18-Aug. 14. The construction will involve the installation of a new water line, storm sewer, curb and gutter improvements and a total rebuild and overlay of the existing road surface. That portion of the 9th Street corridor will be closed to both traffic and parking during the construction period. Simon Contracting will designate two pedestrian crossing areas (University and Clark streets), but overall access in the area will be severely limited. The University will also be replacing concrete sidewalk on the east side of the project area.

13th Street Closure -- The west lane along 13th Street (Knight Hall side) will be closed for road repairs May 28-31.

Traffic Alert:  A 20 mph speed limit is now in effect on 9th, Lewis, Ivinson and 15th streets surrounding the campus

College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled Completion Date: Fall 2010) -- Structural steel will continue to be placed at the addition. Finish work continues in the addition.

ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion date: September 2009) -- Demolition activities will continue in the middle and west portions of the building on the ground and basement levels.

Student Health/Cheney International Center -- Progress continues on the landscape and planting is being installed as weather permits. Irrigation and boulder setting have been completed. The basement interior is wrapping up. Ceiling grids and tile are being set in place and flooring will occur after the ceilings are installed. A punch list walk-through has been scheduled for the first week of June. International groups have been scheduled to move into the building June 25-26.

WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute Buildings east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm will be moved the weekend of May 23-24, weather permitting, in preparation for the Berry Center construction. There will be intermittent closures of the service entrance on Lewis Street, lasting approximately 15 minutes from noon- 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23 and from 8 a.m.8 p.m. Sunday, May 24., as the building is loaded on a trailer and removed. Please use extreme caution when using the service entrance on Lewis Street.

War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled Completion Date: fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through August 24. Drilled piers and excavation is ongoing. Stair towers will be set the week of May 18.

Information Technology Center -- Next week is anticipated to complete all basement punch list items and the remaining items on the roof. Exterior work on the building and landscaping will proceed depending on the weather. Stone pavers and other work on the west side could start. The parking around the fire hydrant at Sorority Row may be re-striped.

College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- Activities include continue landscaping stone work south and west sides, continue to texture/paint exterior concrete when the wind slows down, continue audio/visual installation, finish wood work, final paint touch up, carpet touch up, some electrical conduit rework for the AV/IT, and continue pre-clean and pre-punch The HVAC system will be started Tuesday, commissioning starts June 8, training begins June 15.

UW Police Facility -- The Police Department moved into the new Facility May 12. Punch list items will be ongoing the next month. Exterior site work will continue the next few weeks (depending on the weather) and will block the alley to the south at times.

Animal Science (Scheduled Completion: June 2009) -- The west restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. East restrooms will be available.

General Classroom Renovations -- Phase 2 (Scheduled completion date: August 21.) Classrooms to be renovated this summer include Bioscience 217, 218, 219 and 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112 and 3114. Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building. Demolition will be ongoing.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

9th Street from Lewis Street to Grand Avenue --
Construction continues. Access to the Speech and Hearing Clinic will be maintained via Clark Street. Additional signage has been posted at 8th and Clark streets to direct people to the parking lot on the west side of Health Sciences.

Ross Hall --
Painters will be preparing the fourth floor ceiling for paint Friday, May 29 and will be painting the ceiling Saturday, May 30. Electricians will be replacing lights on the third and fourth floors next week.

19th Street -- Installation of new light poles along 19th Street between Harney and Willett continues. Please watch for trucks and equipment in the area.

Fine Arts -- Re-roofing part of the building continues. The staging area is on the southwest side of the building. The southwest entry will be closed throughout the project. Please use another entrance.

Biological Sciences -- Construction of new walls in the building continues. Work has now progressed to the southwest stairwell. The stairwell is closed while the work proceeds. Please use the elevator or another stairwell during construction. In case of an emergency this stairway will not be locked at any time during this construction. Please use caution on the south side walkway due to increased vehicle traffic.

Physical Sciences -- New walls are being constructed on the landings in the northeast stairwell. The stairwell is closed while the work proceeds. Please use the elevator or another stairwell during construction. In case of an emergency this stairway will not be locked at any time during construction.

Old Engineering -- Concrete will be poured next week at the south entrance. Please use caution around the front entrance. The building is accessible at the Petroleum Engineering entrance to the west of the construction.

Engineering --
Painting of common areas will continue for the next one or two weeks on the fifth floor.

Wyoming Union --
Construction activities for Panda Express continue. Pedestrian traffic will be routed around the work area as needed. Please use caution in this congested area.
