Many events are scheduled during International Education Week, Nov. 16-21, at the University of Wyoming.
The first film of the Global Lens Film Series, "Getting Home," will be shown Monday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union West Yellowstone Ballroom. The Chinese road comedy follows Zhao as he struggles to fulfill a dying co-worker's last wish to be buried in China's Three Gorges region. The film depicts the loss of traditions and community in modern China.
Tuesday, Nov. 17, will begin with a forum on "Understanding Consequences and Opportunities of Rapid Social Changes Inside China" from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Wyoming Union West Ballroom. The forum will feature five Chinese visiting scholars of sociology, political science, history and Chinese literature, and offer an intimate inside perspective on China. At 7 p.m., the Global Lens Film Series continues in the same room with the Iranian film "Those Three," which follows three conscripts of the Iranian army who desert their camp in the frozen wilderness of Northern Iran.
The Academy Award-nominated Nepalese film "Himalaya" will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the College of Education building auditorium. "Himalaya" is the story of an ancient tribe that leads a caravan of yaks across the mountains, carrying salt from the high plateau down to the plains.
The Global Lens Film Series concludes Thursday, Nov. 19, with the Brazilian film "Mutum," at 7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union East Ballroom. "Mutum" is about an imaginative boy living on a small farm in a remote region of Brazil whose life is changed after a chance encounter and an unexpected gift.
Students can learn to tie a sari, wear kimonos or learn their name in different languages during International Night, Friday, Nov. 20, beginning at 9 p.m. Food will be served during the event in the Wyoming Union ballroom.
An International Etiquette Dinner will conclude the week Saturday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m., in the Wyoming Union ballroom. Dinner guests will learn about mealtime traditions in the Middle East, while eating food from the region. It is free, but tickets are required, and will be available at the Wyoming Union Information Desk Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 19, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or as long as tickets remain. Approximately 100 tickets will be given out each day.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. UW sponsors are the International Students Association, International Studies Student Club, International Students and Scholars, Friends of Nepal and ASUW.
