HOPES Program

Healthy Options for the Prevention and Education of Substances

The HOPES Program promotes the message of personal wellness via guidance, education, research, and collaboration focused on healthy choices about the use of alcohol and other drugs.

Unlike some substance abuse prevention programs that utilize fear-based approaches and promote a "just-say-no" message, the HOPES Program takes a more positive approach and focuses on harm reduction.

We recognize that college students are young adults who have the intellectual capacity to make responsible, informed decisions about their substance use. Therefore, it is the role of HOPES to provide students with accurate information regarding substance use and the skills necessary to reduce or eliminate harm.

The University of Wyoming has earned the highly regarded Campus Prevention Network (CPN) Seal of Prevention for our best-in-class prevention and wellness programs.

The CPN Seal represents the highest standard for online prevention education, with a rigorous set of criteria to ensure we are making a measurable impact across the critical health and safety areas of sexual assault, alcohol and drug misuse, mental health, and diversity and inclusion.

As part of the Wellness Center, the HOPES Program utilizes a holistic approach to substance use prevention. While there are services HOPES offers that directly discuss the health risks of using/misusing, as well as the responsible use of, alcohol and other drugs, the HOPES Program also utilizes the eight dimensions of wellness to mitigate substance abuse: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, financial, environmental, and social.

Programs HOPES offers:

  • AlcoholEdu for College Primary and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates online courses

  • Step Up! Bystander Intervention Training

  • A-Team Coalition

  • Healthy Poke Patrol

  • AUDIT and CUDIT Screenings

  • American College Health Association National College Health Assessment
