Federal Aid
If you complete a FASFA and qualify for certain types of federal financial aid, some can be used to fund a study abroad program. Specifically, federal grants (such as the Pell Grant) and the Federal Direct Loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized) can typically be applied.
Institutional Commitments and Awards
Renewing scholarships that are offered by UW can be used for an exchange study abroad program where tuition is billed by UW. Those students will be enrolled in a UW 4001 level course placeholder. Scholarships that are in this category include:
- All Commitments and the individual scholarships used to fulfill them
- Western Undergraduate Exchange Award (WUE)
- Trustees' Scholars Award
Students who elect to enroll in a non-exchange study abroad program where tuition is billed by the participating university will waive that semester's eligibility for the renewing scholarship.
Study Abroad Scholarships
UW has many scholarships that are specific to study abroad experiences, including the Cheney Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. Cheney is the largest land-grant university study abroad scholarship endowment in the nation! These scholarships are awarded through WyoScholarships, our scholarship platform, and students can find scholarship opportunities there by selecting the Opportunities tab and searching for "study abroad". Please note that scholarship will not appear unless an active application cycle is open. Plan to apply for scholarships the semester before you go.
Hathaway Scholarship
The state-funded scholarship for eligible Wyoming high school graduates can be used to fund a study abroad program. If a student is eligible to receive the need-based Hathaway Scholarship as well, it can also be used for this purpose.
External Scholarships
Students are encouraged to look for scholarship opportunities funded by organizations external of UW to help pay for their study abroad experience. Many donors will elect to submit those external scholarships to our office for awarding.
