Stewart Family Serviceship Award & Public Service Initiative

The Stewart Family Serviceship Award is part of the Stewart Family Public Service Initiative housed within the School of Politics, Public Affairs & International Studies (SPPAIS). This initiative seeks to advance public service opportunities for UW students through its signature student fellowship that supports a service and/or applied research project of the awardee’s choice and the Stewart Family Professorship in Public Service that was established in 2025.

Each year, SPPAIS, in partnership with the Service, Leadership, and Community Engagement Office, seeks proposals from UW students for the award which provides a $5,000 stipend to complete an independent service-learning/service-research project.

The serviceship award is funded by the Stewart family in honor of their late parents Clyde E. and Jerrine N. Stewart, who served as daily examples of people immersed in family, community and work. As such, they were of consequence in helping address community needs and real-world challenges. They were enriched by simply doing what they could. Thus, their own family and community were also enriched.

The award continues this legacy by supporting students working on their own applied community research or service project that addresses a real world need or challenge on a local, state, national or global level. The application deadline is the last Friday in February with awardees notified by the last Friday in March.

The stipend will be awarded through a competitive process that is open to all UW students. Guidelines for proposals are broad as the specific needs being addressed should be community-defined. The selected student(s) must be involved in an applied community research or service project that addresses a real-world need or challenge on a local, state, national or global level. Students from all fields of study are encouraged to submit proposals.
