Principal Leadership Academy

307 Principal Leadership Academy

The 307 Principal Leadership Academy began in the 2023-24 school year with an initial cohort of 13 principals from 8 school districts around the state. The success of this group and impact they had on their mentees led the University of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Education to partner together to expand the work to support more new principals in the state. The 307 Principal Leadership Academy is dedicated to supporting new principals and will provide ongoing professional learning for experienced school leaders.

Supporting Our Principals

  • Experienced principals will undergo comprehensive training in mentoring techniques.

  • The training focuses on equipping them with the skills necessary to effectively support and guide new principals.

  • New principals will participate in both in-person and virtual gatherings.

  • These sessions will take place throughout their first two years as principals.

  • The aim is to help them better understand the roles, responsibilities, and challenges inherent in school leadership.

The training for mentors and mentees will concentrate on six key pillars:

  • Coaching: Developing effective coaching techniques to support professional growth.

  • Data Analysis: Utilizing data to inform decision-making and improve school performance.

  • Assertive Communication: Building strong communication skills to lead with confidence.

  • Providing Feedback: Learning how to give constructive feedback that promotes improvement.

  • Building Relationships: Fostering positive relationships within the school community.

  • Maintaining Balance: Ensuring a healthy work-life balance to sustain long-term success.
  • The mentoring plan for Wyoming principals serves as a comprehensive guide for both mentors and mentees.

  • Mentors and mentees are encouraged to meet bi-weekly to discuss progress and challenges.

  • The plan includes completing instructional rounds twice each year to observe and learn from real classroom experiences.

  • Establishing clear goals is an essential part of the mentoring process.

  • Identifying a problem of practice and addressing it through an action research project is a key component of the plan.
