Augmentative & Alternative Communication

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is an area of clinical practice that addresses the needs of individuals with significant and complex communication disorders, which may include impairments in speech-language production or understanding, in both spoken and written communication. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are the professionals who provide AAC services and conduct assessments to determine the most appropriate AAC system for an individual. Anyone of any age who cannot communicate effectively and efficiently in all environments and with all partners may benefit from AAC. To request an AAC assessment, individuals can contact the SLP at their school or early childhood developmental center, ask their primary care physician for a referral to an SLP, or seek assistance from the Wyoming Assistive Technology Resource (WATR) by reaching out to twofford@uwyo.edu.
