Self Care

Law school and life can be stressful. Taking care of yourself is the key to managing both. Learning how to practicing self care and stress management now will help you prioritize your goals and find a balance between your personal and professional life as a lawyer.

Self care is made up of many facets- proper nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, satisfying and uplifting relationships, perspective, and personal meaning.

Healthy Diet: Unhealthy eating can impair your concentration and increase stress. You can improve your diet by increasing fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains, while reducing the amount of processed and sugary foods you eat, as well as alcohol consumption.

Exercise: Whether you choose to run, bike, lift weights, climb, ski, do yoga, or go for a hike, regular exercise is good for your mental and physical health. Laramie offers many options for physical activity- with over 20 facilities and the surrounding mountain ranges, there is something for everyone.

Sleep: Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep can contribute to stress and anxiety. Sleep also allows us to focus and handle difficult situations more easily. Developing a bedtime routine and having a comfortable sleep environment can help you get a good night's rest.

Friends & Family: Personal relationships are important. Law school is not easy, and having a good support system can help alleviate some of the stresses related to your studies and life in general. Having friends that are also in law school can be beneficial to your study practices and your social life. It is good to have friends that can relate to your struggles as a law student.

Have Fun: Sometimes it is difficult to make time for yourself, but without a little fun, it is easy to get burnt out. Set aside time to do things you enjoy. Here are some ideas: crafting, dancing, playing with your pets, getting coffee/a meal with a friend, taking a drive, watching some TV.

Relax: Learn to recognize your stressors, and find healthy ways to cope with them. Find ways to relax your mind and body, such as meditation and stretching.

Find Meaning: For some, law school is an easy fit to their personal meaning and sense of purpose. For others, not so much. Practicing mindfulness, gratitude, kindness and forgiveness can lead to a happier and more meaningful life. Discovering personal values and a sense of purpose can cultivate a healthy perspective when making decisions in your time as a law student and in your career as a lawyer.
