Looking to leverage your skills and enhance your value when you start your career path? Consider a dual PharmD/Master of Science in Health Services Administration (MSHSA) degree. This multidisciplinary graduate program provides pharmacy students with the opportunity to take MSHSA classes while in pharmacy school and receive a Master of Science degree without having to add any additional years of schooling. Students acquire leadership decision-making skills along with the skills that are central to four specialty tracks:  Biopharmaceutical Regulatory Compliance, Health Economics and Outcomes Research, Health Institution Leadership, and Healthcare Quality and Improvement.  In addition, specific courses from each program can count for electives in the other program.

The applicant must notify both programs that they are applying for the dual degree and must be admitted by each program separately to be able to participate.  To remain in the dual degree program, the student must comply with the minimum performance standards of both programs as outlined by the College of Pharmacy.

Why PharmD / MSHSA?

There has been a shift in the marketplace for traditional pharmacists over the past several years. With a higher number of graduates entering the profession, it has become saturated in some areas of the US. Elite programs have recognized this effect on supply and demand and have implemented PharmD dual degree programs. The PharmD/M.S. in Health Services Administration program at UW provides students with the ability to gain both credentials upon graduation and become a desirable candidate when entering the competitive job market. Not only are students provided with the state-of-the-art pharmacy knowledge, but they are also well-versed in real-world application and decision-making across all healthcare industry environments leveraging both their pharmacy and Health Services Administration skill sets.

This multidisciplinary graduate program provides pharmacy students with a complementary business degree to start their own business or to advance into management positions during their careers. Students will acquire management and leadership decision-making skills along with the skills that are central to pharmacy.

The Doctor of Pharmacy/MBA takes five years to complete - four years of Pharmacy studies and one year of MBA core courses. Students spend their first year (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters) in the MBA program taking core courses and completing a summer consulting project (35 credits). For the next four years, students complete the traditional PharmD curriculum, with the addition of the MBA Capstone (3 credits) course in the second year. Students completing this program will earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and a Master of Business Administration degree.
