Student Spotlight

Equine Science Student Michael Byrd is taking part in a spring internship with the Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI) program. This program is all about bringing in students and exposing them to the Thoroughbred industry in central Kentucky. In the spring internship program they focus mainly on broodmares and foals because it is foaling and breeding season for the Thoroughbred industry. Michael is working with Stone Farm as his host farm where he will live and work at through the internship. Currently he is working on one of their broodmare crews. He help feed and care for all the mares with the rest of the crew. This could mean anything from letting mares out to pasture, cleaning stalls, holding mares for farriers, or even putting hoof wraps on and checking pregnant mares for signs that they are getting ready to foal. He is also on call for when a mare is foaling, he works alongside the farm manager to ensure everything goes alright for both the mare and the foal. Along with day to day tasks the KEMI program interns also attend a lecture once a week where they have guest lectures from across the industry. Interns have spoken with nutritionists, equine veterinarians, and other experts in the area. Along with the lectures there are assignments like a weekly journal and some research projects. There are a few events in the Thoroughbred industry that interns get to attend as well during our time in Kentucky, the Derby being one of them. It is a great opportunity to use the skill that have been taught inside the classroom. We hope that Michael has the best time with this internship this summer.
