University of Wyoming Fuel Efficient & Low Emitting Vehicle Parking Program

In working towards the University’s goals of responsible environmental stewardship and community development, the Fuel Efficient and Low Emitting Vehicle Parking Program is being piloted at the Visual Arts Facility.  Approximately 66 percent of students, faculty and staff commute to campus in individual vehicles.  The “LE” parking permit encourages the use of these automobiles through preferred parking in designated University lots.  Additionally, this program helps UW meet its commitment to build all new campus construction equal to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver standard.  Recent construction projects at the University of Wyoming have had a goal of attaining Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.

LEED is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to evaluate the design and construction of a building according to five environmental categories:  Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Additional credit is given for innovative features and focusing on regional priorities.  Alternative transportation such as low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles reduce pollution and the land development impacts from their use.

The Visual Arts Facility, located at the intersection of 22nd Street and Willett Drive, is the first building project on the UW campus to pursue the LEED credit for fuel efficient and low emitting vehicle parking.  To qualify, a vehicle must achieve a minimum green score of 40 on the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy annual rating guide.  The achieve LEED credit preferred parking must provided for these vehicles for 5% of the total vehicle parking spaces on the project site.  Five of these spaces will soon be installed in the Visual Arts parking lot.

Current and future building projects on campus may consider pursuing the low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles parking LEED credit as well, creating additional “LE” permitted spaces.

Program Details and Qualifying Criteria

  • A free University of Wyoming “LE” permit must be obtained and displayed in order to parking in “LE” spaces at the Visual Arts building.

  • The “LE” permit must be displayed in conjunction with a valid permit for the area.
