The department may offer, depending on funding, up to two prize lectureships for recent (within two years) graduates from the MFA and MA programs, subject to the dictates of departmental need. Winners will be chosen from the pool of prize lectureship applicants separately from the pool of regular temporary lectureship applicants. Awards are based on competitive excellence, which includes demonstrated academic and teaching abilities. If no candidate meets these requirements, these positions will be filled from the pool of applicants for temporary lectureships.
This award is for a one-year maximum appointment. Winners will be eligible to apply in the regular temporary lectureship pool for the following year. The prize lectureship will be counted as the first year in the maximum four-year lifetime cap on the hiring of temporary lecturers. Those holding prize lectureship will have the same salary, benefits and responsibilities as those from the regular pool. They will be responsible for a 4/4 teaching load per academic year with no more than one non-classroom assignment per semester. "Shadow teaching" in ESL or technical writing would constitute a non-classroom assignment as would appointments in 5900 mentoring, the ILC, and the Writing Center. Lectureship winners will typically teach 1010, 2020, and with the proper training, possibly 1210, 0220, and 4010.
Application requirements and criteria will be announced by the department chair. In the past, application requirements included a letter of application to the department chair; a resume or vita; a teaching portfolio (student evaluations of teaching, peer reviews or classroom observations of teaching, course syllabi, and a self assessment); a writing sample; and three letters of recommendation, one regarding the applicant's academic performance (preferably from the thesis director) and one regarding the applicant's teaching performance (preferably from the student's 5900 mentor). Upon hire, the winner(s) must submit an official copy of the transcript with the MFA degree posted.
