The GEAR UP Opportunity Scholarship is for active GEAR UP students who participated
under the 2017-2024 GEAR UP Grant. It is $800 per semester and can be used at the
post-secondary institution of your choice (institutions must be accredited and eligible
to receive federal financial aid).
The University of Wyoming (UW) sets aside $150,000 each year to aid GEAR UP Wyoming students in their pursuit of a bachelor's degree at UW. The UW GEAR UP Institutional Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated regular participation in the GEAR UP program. Other requirements will be verified by each applicant's host GEAR UP site.
The UW GEAR UP (GU) Institutional Scholarship application is open from October 1 – April 1. New awards are made every fall semester. Additional awards may be made in the spring semester based on available funds. Students who received this scholarship in the fall do not have to re-apply to get additional spring funding.
To apply, please follow the steps below:
Apply for admission to the University of Wyoming.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 15. Complete the FAFSA verification process by April 1.
Watch your email for messages concerning your aid and make sure you file the proper paperwork, when requested, before any deadlines pass.
Students must also work with their local GEAR UP coordinator to demonstrate participation in the GEAR UP program by using a scholarship rubric. Students can view the scholarship manual which includes all requirements here.
Students only need to apply for the scholarship once. There is no need to reapply each year; however, there are continued eligibility requirements that are reviewed each semester.
Continued Eligibility Requirements:
These scholarships are awarded to former GEAR UP Wyoming students who are attending Wyoming community colleges. Most community college partner institutions have funds they award specifically to former GEAR UP Wyoming students. Scholarship eligibility criteria are determined by the individual community college.
Please check the links below for individual GEAR UP scholarship eligibility requirements at the community college you plan to attend.
The Hathaway Scholarship program provides merit- and need-based awards to eligible students. GEAR UP works with students to prepare and encourage them to meet the criteria set by the Hathaway program.

GEAR UP Wyoming helps students apply for the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. Daniels Fund Scholarships are awarded in the spring to graduating high school seniors and are supplemental after other federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid and scholarships.
Students may use their scholarship at any two- or four-year accredited, nonprofit college or university in the United States with an intention to complete a bachelor's degree.
