For UW Faculty Across the Disciplines

University of Wyoming “University Studies Program (USP)” requirements:

Currently, the University of Wyoming only indirectly requires the general undergraduate population to demonstrate global/international/diversity competency. Under “Personal and Social Responsibility,” a non-credit bearing student learning outcome detailed in the 2015 University Studies Program, students are required to demonstrate “Intercultural Knowledge and Competence,” which is described as follows: 

Students will acquire an understanding of diverse cultures and philosophies within and across societies and recognize the value of interacting with people different from themselves. Through coursework and co-curricular activities, students will: 1. Understand various perspectives from within diverse traditions of cultures, regions, religions or worldviews. 2. Compare historical complexities and how those influence societies, politics, economics, social issues, and communications between groups of people. 3. Examine global organization and interdependence.

Thus, if you are a member of the teaching faculty, consider the following:

• Design curricula that challenge UW students to consider various perspectives, historical complexity, and global organization and interdependence.
• Consider and emphasize the complex cultures and identities of students, both domestic and international, already enrolled in your classes. 
• Encourage students interested in international experience and research to study abroad. Be sure to encourage your students to apply for numerous scholarship opportunities, such as those offered through the Center for Global Studies.
• Check out our newsletter for information about international co-curricular events. Considering offering your busy students in-class credit to attend events around campus, or design class assignments that require students to engage in UW's thriving international community.
• As a member of UW faculty, consider doing your own international research. The Center for Global Studies offers competitive, but generous, funding opportunities for faculty to expand the impact of their research to communities around the world.
