UW is a global university, with dozens of international partnerships and opportunities for UW faculty, students, and staff to study, connect, and conduct international research. With such a large international footprint, UW is well-situated for engaging alumni experiences, visiting faculty opportunities, and comprehensive learning opportunities for students from around the world.
Our current agreements include: bilateral and multilateral student exchange agreements, consortia agreements, collaborative degree programs (e.g. joint, dual, and consecutive degree programs), and education abroad program and partnership agreements. If you are interested in establishing an institutional agreement between UW and an international institution, contact our WyoGlobal team for support.
Most visiting international scholars and professionals use the J visa program. The J visa program is an Exchange Visitor Program with objectives of public diplomacy and mutual educational and cultural exchange.
UW currently sponsors J-1 Exchange Visitors in the Student, Professor, Research Scholar, Short-Term Scholar, and Student Intern categories. The J Exchange Visitor Program is a non-immigrant program, meaning the visitor maintains ties to his/her home country and expects to return there upon completion of the exchange in the United States. A Form DS-2019 must be issued by the University of Wyoming before you can apply for your J-1 visa.
International applicants interested in working at UW should reach out to their prospective department for information about available positions and opportunities, as well as requirements and expectations. WyoGlobal can assist international employees with life and work at the university, as well as visa requirements.
International scholars may visit the UW on a J-1 visa.
Departments may invite international research scholars, short-term scholars, and professors.
International professionals who already have obtained a position at UW must apply for an H-1B visa for “temporary worker” status. Their employer must be willing to sponsor their visa application.
For any additional questions about visiting scholar and professional requirements, please contact International Students and Scholars: uwglobal@uwyo.edu.
The English Language Center supports visiting scholars both before arrival in Laramie, and to assist in getting involved in the community:
Pre-arrival: The ELC facilitates J-1 visa applications with zoom-based in person Oral Proficiency Interviews. Email elc@uwyo.edu to make an appointment.
Post-arrival: The ELC welcomes all visiting scholars and their families to join open community conversation hour and to participate in family friendly activities to get to know the town of Laramie. More info on the ELC website.
