Getting the Most Out of the Library as a Transfer Student
By Shannon S.
A new school year is almost upon us, and we are excited to see all the returning students
and new faces! This blog aims to highlight library services to welcome our new transfer
students to the UW community.
Where is the library?
UW Libraries is home to several libraries, but the main library is Coe Library, found
between the Wyoming Union Building and Ivinson Street. Coe Library is composed of
6 levels, 5 of which are open to the public, and you enter the building on level 2.
You can discover more about navigating this space and other branch libraries on our
Maps + Locations page.
Typical hours of Coe Library during the semester are 7:30 AM to 11 PM during the week
(closing at 7 PM on Fridays), 1 PM to 5 PM on Saturdays, and 1 PM to 11 PM on Sundays.
To double-check before you go, our Hours webpage stays up to date with holiday closures and other exceptions.
One of the best parts of UW Libraries is that we have a robust online library presence as well! Many of our services are offered both in person and online.
How do you get A library card?
Great news! Once you obtain your WyoOne card, or student ID, you already have it! You’ll need your WyoOne ID with you to check
out any physical materials and reserve study rooms, but if you’re using our online
materials (we have lots!) just sign-in with your university information (hint: same
as your email).
As undergraduate students, you have a 28-day check-out period with 2 renewals for
materials. Learn more about our borrowing policies.
What can you do at the library?
UW Libraries is home to the Student Learning Commons found on level 1 of Coe Library.
The Learning Commons is where you can find the STEP Tutor Center and the Writing Center. Meetings with tutors and writing center staff are held in the Learning Commons. This
space also houses lots of comfy furniture designed for group and individual study
needs.
Best of all there are both quiet and collaboration floors in the library! Designated Quiet Study Floors are
levels 3 and 4, while conversation and collaboration is encouraged on other levels
of Coe Library (also known as Group Study floors).
How else can the library help?
The libraries provide numerous services, but a few to keep in mind as you move forward
in your educational journey are:
QuickSearch is the tool that allows you to search for materials in our collection (you can think
of it like the libraries version of Google!). QuickSearch allows you to search all
the physical and most of the online resources available through the University of
Wyoming Libraries, including books and eBooks, articles, videos, and UW-created resources
like theses and dissertations.
Research Guides tend to be subject-based resources. These guides provide directions on accessing
library materials, tools and more based on the subject they are covering. The Transfer Students’ Library Guide is a great starting place!
Research Refresh, is a workshop that will cover navigating different types of sources, integrating
library resources into the tools you already use, research tips and tricks, as well
as creative and innovative tools and services to present the information you find.
UW Libraries offers workshops on lots of topics -- find one to fit your needs on our events calendar!
UW Libraries also provides services with your wellbeing in mind. For example, our
popular reading collection on Level 1 is a great option when you need a break from
your assignment reading, or even a new recipe to try! You can also find popular titles
in our Libby app.
Welcome, Pokes!
We look forward to meeting you at Transfer Saddle Up, which is just around the corner!
