Elmer E. Smiley
(1898-1903)
Elmer Smiley was the President of the University of Wyoming from 1898-1903. He was named after Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, who fought for the Union during the Civil War. He was born in Syracuse, New York on August 6, 1862. He attended the celebrated Onondaga Academy and graduated valedictorian in 1879 and later received his B.A. from Syracuse University in 1885. Following this, Smiley took a post-graduate course in Semitic languages at Yale University where he received his B. D. degree.
