Research and Teaching
Sandy received her MSW from the University of Montana and her Ph.D. from Portland
State University. She has over a decade of direct practice experience in the areas
of mental health, disability, and youth development. Her research pursues two overlapping
areas of inquiry: examining social work’s role in upholding systems of injustice and
the study of contemporary issues pertaining to the carceral state. A primary goal
of her scholarship is to advance community-based, non-punitive approaches to addressing
harm and need. Sandy’s teaching and scholarship are driven by an emphasis on social
justice and aim to strengthen the relationship between critical and feminist theories
and social work education, research, and practice.
