Angel, a black German Shepherd, was born at the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Canine Development Center in New York in July 2023. He spent his adolescence with his puppy raiser in central New York, learning basic obedience, house manners, and exploring all kinds of environments. After a year with his wonderful puppy raiser, he returned to the Guiding Eyes campus to take his In For Training (IFT) test to determine his eligibility as a guide dog. When he passed with flying colors, he began formal harness training to learn how to safely guide a person with low vision or blindness. Angel met his partner, Shelby, and graduated as an official guide dog from Guiding Eyes for the Blind in September 2025.
Angel was special named after Angel Rodriguez, a long-time guide dog user, supporter of Guiding Eyes, and advocate for the blind, who sadly passed away in 2023. Angel (dog) is proud to carry on Mr. Rodriguez’s legacy through his dedication to being a great guide dog.
When not working, Angel LOVES to catch a frisbee, fetch the ball, play goalie, and chew on bones. He is a snuggler and will have conversations with anyone who will listen. He lives with Shelby and retired guide dog Olana, a yellow lab.
