Dean's Weekly Address

Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,

I’m excited to share the recipients of the Outstanding Former Faculty and Outstanding Alumni Awards.

This year’s Outstanding Former Faculty is Dr. Oliver Walter, who joined the UW Department of Political Science in 1972, where he went on to become department chair for eight years. In 1989, he was appointed the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He served in that position for over 20 years, retiring in 2013.

This year’s Outstanding Alumni are Dr. Christina Hassija and SPPAIS Professor Dr. Jean Garrison. Last year, Hassija was named dean of California State University, San Bernardino, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She will also hold an academic appointment as a tenured full professor in their Department of Psychology. Garrison has worked at UW since 2000, and she was the College of Arts & Sciences Seibold Professor for 2021-22 and current Director of the Malcolm Wallop Civic Engagement Program. Please help me congratulate these deserving individuals!

There will be plenty of activity in the A&S Auditorium this weekend, with a Chinese New Year celebration featuring a performance by Jasmine Flower Dance. I’m looking forward to sharing opening remarks at this event, which takes place this Saturday from 1-3 p.m.

This evening, there are student exhibition openings in the This and That Galleries in the Visual Arts Building from 5-7 p.m.

Additionally, student Ashton J. Hacke, recipient of the 2023 Larsh Bristol Photojournalism Fellowship and keynote speaker at the Annual Wyoming Press Association Conference, will share his presentation tonight at 5 p.m. in the Coe Library, Room 506.
