Dean's Weekly Address

Greetings Staff and Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences,

Congratulations on successfully completing another spring semester! It’s been a wonderful academic year, filled with countless achievements, and it simply wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s commitment to our college. Your dedication and hard work have truly made a difference.

This past weekend, we held the annual A&S Awards Banquet and honored several award recipients including outstanding alumni, outstanding former faculty, extraordinary merit in teaching and research, and the Beatrice Gallatin Beuf Golden Apple Award. Thank you to Dean’s Office staff Betsy Bress, Michala Drum, and Mady Danko for planning such a terrific event. For the full list of those recognized, see the press release at https://uwyo.edu/news/2024/05/uw-college-of-arts-and-sciences-celebrates-award-recipients.html.

Yesterday, we celebrated the College of Arts and Sciences Top Graduates with an awards luncheon. Having the opportunity to recognize these outstanding students, alongside their friends and families, is always a highlight of the year.

On Monday Laurie Sanchez and I presented the college budget to the Board of Trustees. We received some good questions and had a positive discussion. The budget was approved by the Board on Thursday.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Carolyn Pepper, Professor of Psychology, has agreed to serve as the next Associate Dean in the college starting later this summer. Dr. Pepper has been at UW for over 20 years and has had extensive experience as an administrator, including serving as the department head of Psychology. She we will be an outstanding new member of the Dean’s Office team.  Dr. Pepper will be taking over the Associate Dean position currently held by Dr. Karen Bartsch Estes when she retires. Karen has been a remarkable member of the dean’s office and has provided extraordinary leadership, teaching, research, and service at many levels during her career at UW. Thank you, Karen, for your outstanding work and dedication to our college.

Our new degrees in English and Modern and Classical Languages were approved by the Board of Trustees this week. I am quite excited to enroll new cohorts of students into these new programs.

As you know, commencement is this weekend. The graduate ceremony for A&S will take place at 12:15 p.m., and the undergraduate ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Let's come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates!

I wish you all a joyous commencement weekend ahead.

Most sincerely,

J. Scott Turpen
