STEP 1102: Course Approval

Process for Faculty and Staff

STEP 1102: STEP into College is the University of Wyoming First Year Experience (FYE) course for first-year students. This optional one-credit graded class is designed to help students with the transition to college in three areas: academics, engagement, and wellness/personal growth. To submit a request to have a STEP 1102 course included in your program, department, or college:

  1. Become familiar with the benefits to teaching an FYE course, including optional research articles.

  2. Become familiar with the background and principles of FYE courses, including optional research articles.

  3. Read the recommendations for instructor qualifications.

  4. Look at the sample syllabus, course guidelines, and other materials on the FYE website.

  5. Contact the FYE Coordinator, Mollie Hand, for an in-person meeting to discuss the potential course. Deadline: March 15.

  6. Submit updated syllabus with proposed subtitle and targeted student audience along with program-specific content (if applicable) and FYE Course Approval Form to FYE Coordinator. First consideration will be given to forms submitted by April 1, 2022.

  7. Syllabus will be distributed to FYE committee for review. Revisions may be necessary.

  8. Syllabus and form will be passed on to the Director of LeaRN, April Heaney, for signature.

  9. Upon approval, the course will be set up in the appropriate semester’s class schedule.

  10. Attend a pre-semester colloquium (for first-time instructors) in mid-August. Specific date to be announced mid-May.
