Meet our Global Student Ambassadors

Every year, the International Students and Scholars team hires a team of Global Student Ambassadors to help welcome our new international students to campus. We asked our GSAs to introduce themselves with a series of questions. Please see a sampling of their responses below.

Nana Afua Gyau Frimpong, Ghana (“Nana, from Ghana”)

MS, Civil Engineering

Nana Afua Gyau Frimpong smiling at cameraHow do you think your experience here has helped shape and direct your future plans and career goals?

On a scale of 1-10, I will say a 15. UW has really helped me and made me aware of the numerous opportunities which can be made available to me. And made me aware that I can do it if I put my mind to it and with the right guidance.

Is there a specific person or people at UW who has/have helped you achieve your goals, and how have they impacted you?

My advisor, ISS, and the Ghanaian community. They have been an amazing help and support system to me here in Laramie. Their daily support and guidance.

How would you describe the academic atmosphere on campus in your experience, and what special academic opportunities have you had during your time here?

Compared to what I used to have back home, the academic experience is very different and helpful. Students are advised to use different ways to study based on your strengths and capabilities. Resources such as the gadgets from the school (laptops and iPads, etc.) are very helpful and less of a financial burden to students.

What is life in Laramie and Wyoming like?

Life in Laramie to me is cozy and nice. Even though I am an extrovert, I like to stay in places that are less populated and cozy, and that’s exactly what Laramie has given to me. It is also financially stable to live here.

What’s one of your favorite experiences you’ve had at UW and why?

Oooohhh. I have lots of amazing experiences and it would be hard to pinpoint one. I will say working for ISA (International Student Association) and ISS was very fun and educating. It helped me connect with people from other parts of the world and go for organized trips with ISS and other student organizations. It gave me the opportunity to try different foods.

How have you been involved on campus (other than in academics) and what have you gained from this?

I have worked as the ASUW (Associated Students of the University of Wyoming) representative for ISA and as a Global Student Ambassador. These two roles have helped me connect with some of the student body, which has helped me to also be a contributor for some policies and initiatives done by the student body which will benefit the international community.

Muhammad Sulthon, Bandung, Indonesia

BS, Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Management

Muhammad Sulthon smiling at camera in front of a lakeWhat factors helped you make the decision to come to UW?

The main reason I considered UW to study wildlife was because of its high reputation in programs relating to ecology. I was also attracted to its community-oriented campus size and its affordable tuition and living cost.

How would you describe the academic atmosphere on campus in your experience, and what special academic opportunities have you had during your time here?

The University of Wyoming is a tightknit community. When I walk around campus, I always see familiar faces. This makes finding special academic opportunities, such as working for your professor in a lab or as part of a research project, as I have been doing, much easier to come across.

Is there a specific person or people at UW who has/have helped you achieve your goals, and how have they impacted you?

One person that holds a special place in my heart is my faculty advisor, Dr. Amy Krist. She has helped me tremendously not only with my academic and career goals, but also through difficult times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. She gave me my first job on campus and has mentored me all the way through my undergraduate career.

What’s one of your favorite experiences you’ve had at UW and why?

Number one, seeing our sports teams constantly kick CSU’s butt. I also cherish my experience with all the wonderful people I have met. In particular, the people I have come across within the international community have made me realized how lucky I am. To be able to meet people from different backgrounds and beliefs is something not everyone gets to experience.

What is life in Laramie and Wyoming like?

Easygoing. Laramie is a small but charming town. It is a perfect setting for students and scholars who wish to pursue their academic achievements with minimal external pressures or distractions. Nonetheless, Laramie’s relaxed atmosphere is not a strict means of having a boring lifestyle. There are plenty of activities you can do both on and off campus. Wyoming is as beautiful as a Midwest state can be with its magnificent sceneries. Its people are welcoming and full of wonderful stories to tell.

How do you think your experience here has helped shape and direct your future plans and career goals?

I think the foundation of having a solid career in the wildlife field is to be able to be a service to others. Ultimately, people believe that the wellbeing of the biotic world should be stressed for the betterment of human lives. My experience here at UW has enhanced my eagerness to be a service to others. In particular, my involvement as a Global Student Ambassador has made me a better person who strives not only for academic success, but also to be a person of servitude.

Is there a specific person or people at UW who has/have helped you achieve your goals, and how have they impacted you?

Professor Linda van Diepen, who serves as my academic advisor, has been a major contributor to my success at the UW. She helped me choose classes and gave me encouragement and support personally, both of which were really helpful throughout my program. The influence of her commitment and guidance on my academic progress and career goals has been substantial.
